Louisa Shisler, Karen Arribas, and Zack Cuellar lead the Vermeer Southeast team, using the AdventHealth Corporate 5K as both a wellness initiative and a fun way to bring employees together outside the office. Their approach turns the race into a team-building experience that motivates, engages, and celebrates everyone who participates.
Q: What are some incentives or strategies your team uses to encourage participation in the Corporate 5K?
A: We promote the event through weekly update emails and cover registration costs for employees and a guest and/or their kids. Team members receive a Vermeer team shirt and a gold star so everyone can see who’s participating. We distribute training guides and encourage employees to challenge themselves. After the race, we provide a meal at our tent and celebrate together. For those who want to be involved but not participate in the race, we offer a Tent Crew. They cheer on participants, take photos, manage the team tent, and also receive a team shirt. For the food drive, we set a goal, and if we meet it, we host a cookout lunch at work.
Q: Please share some of your company’s workplace wellness initiatives and the benefits you’ve seen.
A: Our company offers a wellness benefit that rewards employees for completing their annual physical with a $100 bonus and entry into prize drawings throughout the year. We provide strong health insurance and actively support employees in prioritizing their health. There’s also a park next to our building where employees can walk during breaks.
Q: Is there anything you’d like to share about your company’s experience at the Corporate 5K?
A: We’ve had a positive experience every year. Designing a unique team shirt for each race and spending time together outside of work have been highlights. The race and food drive have become valuable team-building experiences.
Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to a first-time Corporate 5K team?
A: Communicate regularly to keep the event top of mind, especially as deadlines approach. Share training resources, encourage people to challenge themselves, and celebrate together afterward.
