Cross country season is here, and one question we hear from parents all the time is: Does my athlete need cross country spikes?
The short answer is: it depends.
Cross country spikes can provide extra traction on grass, dirt, mud and other uneven surfaces, but they aren't necessarily the right choice for every athlete or every race. The course, the athlete's experience level, and their individual needs all play a role.
What Are Cross Country Spikes?
Cross country spikes are lightweight racing shoes designed specifically for off-road courses. They typically have a more aggressive outsole and removable spikes that help runners grip the ground as they navigate grass, dirt, hills, mud and other challenging terrain.
Compared with traditional running shoes, cross country spikes are generally lighter and provide a more direct connection with the ground. That can be an advantage when racing, especially on softer or slippery surfaces.
Does My Athlete Need Cross Country Spikes?
Not necessarily.
For younger or newer runners, a good pair of running shoes may be all they need. If your athlete is participating in local meets on relatively firm, dry courses, traditional running shoes can provide plenty of traction while offering more cushioning and versatility.
Cross country spikes may be worth considering when your athlete:
- Is racing regularly throughout the season
- Competes on grass, dirt, mud or hilly courses
- Wants additional traction on challenging terrain
- Is an experienced runner looking for a dedicated race shoe
- Is competing at a level where small performance advantages can make a difference
- If your athlete is still developing their running experience, don't feel like they need spikes simply because other runners on the team have them. The best shoe is the one that fits properly and meets the athlete's individual needs.
Getting the Right Fit Matters
Whether your athlete needs spikes or not, fit comes first.
A shoe that doesn't fit properly can be uncomfortable and may affect how an athlete runs. Young runners also need enough room for natural foot movement without having excessive space that allows the foot to slide around inside the shoe.
At Track Shack, our team can help determine whether cross country spikes make sense for your athlete and find a pair that fits their foot and running needs.
